Description
Cyproheptadine HCl 4 mg is an antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes. It is also prescribed for skin reactions like hives and dermatitis. Apart from allergy treatment, it is sometimes used as an appetite stimulant in underweight individuals or those recovering from illness. The medicine works by blocking histamine (a natural substance causing allergy symptoms) and serotonin in the brain, which also contributes to its appetite-boosting effect.
Uses:
Relief from allergic rhinitis, hay fever, and skin allergies
Treatment of itching from insect bites or drug reactions
Appetite stimulation in certain cases
Management of migraine or vascular headaches (off-label use)
Side Effects:
Common: Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation
Less common: Nausea, nervousness, confusion (especially in elderly)
Serious (rare): Fast heartbeat, difficulty urinating, severe allergic reaction to the drug itself
Long-term or excessive use can cause liver strain and dependence for appetite stimulation
It should be taken as prescribed, usually with food, and avoided in infants, elderly with dementia, and people with glaucoma, urinary retention, or certain heart conditions. Overdose may cause severe drowsiness, confusion, or seizures.
