Zoclar 250 (Clarithromycin) – Uses and Side Effects

Zoclar 250, manufactured by Cipla, contains clarithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria and is effective against infections of the respiratory tract, skin, ears, and sinuses.

Uses:

1. Respiratory tract infections – It is commonly prescribed for bronchitis, pneumonia, and throat infections such as pharyngitis and tonsillitis.

2. Skin and soft tissue infections – Used for treating acne, cellulitis, or infected wounds.

3. Sinus infections – Helps relieve symptoms caused by bacterial sinusitis.

4. Ear infections – Treats otitis media, especially in children.

5. Mycobacterial infections – Used as part of combination therapy to treat or prevent infections caused by Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC).

6. Peptic ulcer disease – In combination with other medicines, it helps eradicate Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria linked to ulcers.

Zoclar 250 is usually taken orally and may be prescribed for 7 to 14 days, depending on the infection and patient response.

Side Effects:

Most side effects are mild and temporary, including:

• Nausea and vomiting

• Diarrhea or stomach pain

• Headache

• Altered taste (metallic or bitter)

• Indigestion

Less common but more serious side effects may include:

• Liver problems (yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine)

• Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)

• Irregular heartbeat

• Hearing loss (usually reversible.
