It is commonly prescribed to relieve allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and skin rashes. Apart from its antiallergic effect, it is also used as an appetite stimulant in individuals with poor appetite, underweight conditions, or certain chronic illnesses. Doctors may also prescribe it for migraine prevention, treatment of serotonin syndrome, or other off-label uses.
Uses:
Relief from allergic conditions like hay fever, urticaria, rhinitis, and conjunctivitis
Management of skin reactions due to insect bites, food, or drug allergies
Appetite stimulation in children or adults with low weight
Prevention of migraine attacks in some cases
Supportive treatment in serotonin syndrome
Side Effects:
Most side effects are mild and dose-dependent. Common ones include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and increased appetite leading to weight gain. Some patients may experience irritability, confusion, or restlessness, especially children and the elderly. Rare but serious effects include difficulty urinating, irregular heartbeat, or seizures.
